Executive Retention

Understanding why senior executives choose to stay, grow, or leave organizations.

A Different Perspective

Organizations invest enormous resources in attracting exceptional leaders, yet comparatively little attention is devoted to understanding why those leaders choose to remain.

Executive retention is often explained through familiar concepts such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment, engagement, or compensation. While each contributes to the picture, they do not fully explain the career decisions of senior executives.

My research approaches the question differently.

Drawing on doctoral research involving international mobile executives across 38 countries, together with years of executive leadership experience, I examine executive retention s a forward-looking decision. Senior executives rarely stay simple because they are satisfied with the present. They remain when they believe their most compelling future continues to lie within the organization.

This perspective shifts the conversation from preventing dissatisfaction to creating visible opportunities for continued growth, contribution, and leadership.

The essays collected here explore that perspective through research, executive experience, and practical observation. Together, they examine the leadership behaviors, career opportunities, organizational environments, and future expectations that shape one of the most consequential decisions organizations face: whether their most experienced leaders choose to stay.

Core Ideas

  • Executive retention is fundamentally a future-oriented decision.

  • Career growth matters more than organizations often recognize.

  • Leadership shapes retention more than engagement surveys can measure.

  • Senior executives compare futures, not simply jobs.

  • The strongest performers may leave without showing obvious signs of dissatisfaction
